The battle raged across the once-beautiful field. Warriors fought and fell; some dressed as empire soldiers, others as rebel fighters. Burning arrows sailed through the air, setting both the fighters and land aflame. The wind carried the smell of burning flesh to the two figures watching the battle.

“Look what these fools have done to the land,” the taller figure scowled. “And they call my people barbarians.”

A small hand touched the taller one’s arm. “Calm down, my love. We have come to put a stop to this.”

“The fighting will not stop, Frost. Not until one of them is victorious.”

Frost sighed softly as she pulled the long bow from her shoulder. “Which side would you like to assist?” An arrow of ice began to form in her hand. “...Tak?”

Abruptly, Tak yanked the large sword off her back and used it to intercept an arrow aimed at Frost. “The empire chose to fire on you. Take out their leader.”

“Wanna mark him for me?” Frost asked, pulling the arrow back. Tak twirled her finger in the air and a flaming halo appeared over a man’s head. The soldiers protecting him scattered at the sight of the ring. “Thanks.” She released the arrow, hitting the man in the heart.

“I will never understand how your arrows don’t shatter,” Tak commented as they watched the empire lose the battle without the guidance of their commander. After they finally retreated, the rebels began to put the fires out.

“And I will never understand how you make fire float in the air, so I guess it’s fair. Are we going to continue to aid the rebels, or shall we head towards my home?”
Tak considered it for a moment, frowning slightly. “We will aid the rebels. I do not like how close they have gotten to my valley. Let’s go pack our stuff, and find their leader.” Frost only nodded in understanding as they returned to their camp.

“Intruders!” A watchman shouted as the two women approached. Guards instantly began to gather at the main gate, weapons drawn.

Frost chuckled at the chaos caused by their presence. “Geez, I can’t take you anywhere. You always manage to cause a stir.” She smiled at Tak, but got no response in return. The silence did not bother Frost; she knew that under the black and crimson helmet, Tak was smiling.

“State your reason for trespassing,” a guard demanded.

“Trespassing? You are the ones trespassing. This is my land,” Tak replied in a bored tone. Frost laughed again, angering the guard.

“Control your woman, warrior,” he glared at Tak. “A woman should remain silent. And what possible use could she have for a bow? Women aren’t meant to fight.”

This time Tak laughed, but it was a cold laugh. “You’re a fool. My woman, as you put it, is more than capable of taking care of herself. In fact, she could easily beat you even without her bow,” Tak stated.
A flash of fire from Tak’s armored hand caught Frost’s attention. “You’re getting angry, my love.” The small woman moved in front of Tak and placed her hands on the black chest plate. Frost let her powers roll over her partner, taming the rising flames slightly. “Calm down. If you get too angry, you’ll kill them all. We came to help, remember.”

“What help could a woman be,” the guard snarled, unaware of the danger he was in. “Capture them, and we’ll deal with them later.”

Tak growled and fire sprang from the vents in her armor. “Arrogant fools!” She pulled the great sword from her back, the blade totally engulfed by the flames.

The surrounding rebels stopped at the sight of her, confusion and horror quickly overtaking the men. Frost grabbed Tak’s shoulders to stop her from advancing on the guards. “You must calm down, Tak.” A thin layer of ice began to spread from the archer’s hands, but Tak kept her attention on the men. “Look at me, Tak! Look at me,” Frost demanded. She yanked off Tak’s helmet, which only scared the rebels more when they saw her flaming black hair and eyes. Frost grabbed the back of Tak's neck and pulled her into a slow kiss.

The flames surrounding them both began to die, and Tak leaned on the other woman for support. Frost ran her hand through her partner’s short hair, whispering comforting words in her ear. They stayed like that for several minutes, the soldiers too afraid to approach. “I’m sorry,” Tak finally mumbled into the other girl’s neck. “I’m sorry…”

“Shh, it’s okay. Let’s get you away from these idiots, and find you a place to rest.” Frost grabbed both Tak’s sword and helmet before putting them back in their proper places.

“Wait a moment, please,” someone called when they began to walk away. A man, one that looked much more important than the annoying guards, stood at the gate. “I wish to speak to you, ma’am, and your comrade when he is rested. He can use one of our rooms to sleep while we talk.”
Frost shook her head as she checked Tak’s temperature. The armored woman leaned on Frost heavily, barely awake. “I promise you, sir, that if I’m not there when he wakes up, the result will be far worse than what you just witnessed. Tak is very protective.”

“Very well, we will talk in the room that will be assigned to you for the entirety of your stay. Please follow me.”

Hello all! ~jamuko here, friend of Fey and Des. This is a little work of fiction by Fey, who was too lazy to upload it herself.

Even in this short first 'chapter', Fey has managed to create a setting and characters you can love already! I would be curious to read more of this!

Alright, enough praise, and on with the story.
